What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Plain Guide for Business Owners

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI assistants and answer features to find, understand and quote. Answer engines include ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Instead of a list of links, they give the reader one written answer and cite a few sources. AEO is about being one of those sources.

This guide explains how answer engines choose what to quote, what you can change on your own site, and where AEO and SEO overlap.

How an answer engine builds an answer

Most answer engines work in a similar way, even though each one keeps its exact method private:

  1. The reader asks a question in plain language.
  2. The engine runs one or more searches, often through a regular search index, and fetches a handful of pages.
  3. A language model reads passages from those pages and writes a short answer.
  4. The engine shows links to the pages it relied on.

Two things follow from this. First, a page that is not crawled and indexed cannot be quoted, so the basics of search still matter. Second, the model works with passages, not whole pages. A page with one clear paragraph that answers the question is easier to use than a page where the answer is spread over a long introduction.

What AEO changes on a page

Put the answer first

Open each page or section with a direct answer of two to four sentences, then add the detail. If someone asks "how long does a website redesign take", the first paragraph should say what it usually depends on and give a realistic range for your own work, not a story about your company.

Write headings the way people ask

Use headings that match real questions: "How much does custom software cost?", "What is RAG?", "Do I need a developer for this?". Readers scan them, and answer engines use them to find the passage that fits the question.

Keep one idea per paragraph

Short paragraphs that make one point each are easier to lift into an answer without losing their meaning. Lists and simple tables work well for steps, options and comparisons.

Be specific and checkable

Answer engines and the people reading them both prefer content that names concrete things: the steps, the tools, the trade-offs, the conditions where advice does not apply. Vague claims such as "industry-leading results" give a model nothing it can use. If you quote a number, say where it comes from and when it was checked.

Show who is behind the content

Clear author or company information, an about page, contact details and consistent facts across your site and profiles help an engine decide that your page is a reasonable source. Make sure your company name, services and locations read the same everywhere they appear.

Add structured data

Schema.org markup in JSON-LD (for example Organization, Service, Article and FAQPage) tells machines what a page is about in a fixed format. It does not guarantee a citation, but it removes guesswork.

Let the right crawlers in

Check your robots.txt. Some sites block AI crawlers by accident through a blanket rule or a security setting. Decide on purpose which ones you allow. Blocking a search crawler such as Googlebot or Bingbot also keeps you out of the answer features built on those indexes.

AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results so people click through. AEO aims to have your content used and cited inside an answer. In practice they share most of the groundwork:

  • Goal: SEO aims to rank and earn the click; AEO aims to be quoted or cited in the answer.
  • Unit that matters: for SEO it is the page; for AEO it is the passage.
  • Technical base: both need crawling, indexing and speed; AEO adds access for AI crawlers.
  • Content style: SEO covers the topic in depth; AEO answers the question early, then covers it in depth.
  • Measurement: SEO tracks rankings, clicks and conversions; AEO tracks citations and mentions in answers, plus referral visits.

A sensible plan treats AEO as an extension of good SEO, not a replacement. Pages that are well structured for answers usually read better for people too.

How to tell if AEO is working

Measurement is still rough, so be wary of anyone who promises exact numbers:

  • Ask the engines yourself. Keep a short list of the questions your buyers ask, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google every month, and note which sources are cited.
  • Watch referral traffic. Analytics tools show visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains as referrals.
  • Track branded searches. People who see your name in an answer often search for it later.
  • Use a tracking tool if you need scale. Several SEO platforms now report AI answer visibility for a set of prompts.

Expect results to move slowly and to differ between engines, because each one uses its own index and model.

Common mistakes

  • Writing long introductions before the answer.
  • Publishing many thin pages that repeat each other, which gives an engine no reason to pick yours.
  • Blocking crawlers without meaning to.
  • Stating figures with no source, which makes the whole page less trustworthy.
  • Treating AEO as a one-off task. Answers change as engines update and competitors publish.

Where to start this week

  1. List the ten questions customers ask most before they buy.
  2. Check whether your site answers each one clearly in the first lines of a page or section. Rewrite the ones that do not.
  3. Add FAQ sections and the matching structured data to your key service pages.
  4. Review robots.txt and your crawler settings.
  5. Run the ten questions through two or three answer engines and record who gets cited, so you have a starting point.

If you would rather have help, Loxvo offers answer engine optimization services alongside SEO services: we audit your pages for answer readiness, rewrite the key ones, add structured data and set up simple monthly tracking.

FAQ

Is AEO the same as GEO?

The terms overlap. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is usually used for AI tools that write answers, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, while AEO is the older term that also covered featured snippets and voice assistants. The practical work is largely the same.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Answer engines rely on crawling and search indexes, so the technical and content basics of SEO still apply. AEO adds a focus on clear, quotable answers and on being cited rather than only ranked.

How long does AEO take to show results?

There is no fixed timeline. Changes can only show up after the engines crawl the updated pages, and each engine refreshes on its own schedule, so plan to review progress over months rather than days.

Can a small business compete with big brands in AI answers?

Often, yes, on specific questions. Answer engines look for the passage that best answers a question, and a small business that explains its niche clearly and specifically can be cited alongside much larger sites.
