How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

To get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, let each tool's search crawler reach your site (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot), make sure your key pages are indexed, and write pages that answer specific questions with clear, checkable facts. None of the three companies publishes a citation formula, so nobody can guarantee a citation.

Each of the three tools finds its sources in its own way. This guide sets out what each company has documented (checked on 4 November 2026), what that means for a small or medium business in the US, and one checklist that covers all three.

How do AI assistants decide which websites to cite?

All three tools work in roughly the same two steps:

  1. Retrieve. When a question needs current or specific information, the tool searches the web or its own index and pulls a set of candidate pages.
  2. Write and cite. A language model writes the answer from those pages and links some of them as sources.

A page can only be cited if it makes it into step 1, so crawler access and indexing come before any writing advice.

How to get cited by ChatGPT

OpenAI's crawler documentation lists separate bots for separate jobs:

  • OAI-SearchBot is the one that matters for citations. OpenAI says it "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", and that sites blocking it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.
  • GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it is a training choice, separate from search visibility.
  • ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user's request calls for it. OpenAI notes it is not used for automatic web crawling.

What to do:

  • Check robots.txt and any firewall or bot-protection settings so OAI-SearchBot is not blocked by accident.
  • Decide on GPTBot separately, based on how you feel about model training. You can block training and still allow search.
  • Publish pages that answer the questions your buyers type into ChatGPT, in full sentences that make sense when quoted on their own.

Our earlier guide on how to rank in ChatGPT answers goes deeper on what is known and what is guesswork for ChatGPT specifically.

How to get cited by Perplexity

Perplexity's documentation describes two user agents:

  • PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity states it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation model training, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt if you want your site to appear in search results.
  • Perplexity-User fetches pages when a user asks a question, to help answer it. Perplexity says it does not do general crawling, and that it generally ignores robots.txt because a person requested the visit.

What to do:

  • Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt. If your firewall allowlists crawlers by IP address, Perplexity publishes its IP ranges for that purpose.
  • Perplexity shows its sources prominently, often as numbered citations next to each claim. Pages with one clear fact per paragraph, specific names, and dates are easier to attach to a single claim.
  • Keep pricing, service and location pages current, because answers built from them inherit their errors.

How to get cited in Google AI Overviews

Google's guidance on AI features in Search is the most detailed of the three, and the main message is that there is no separate system to optimize for:

  • Google states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."
  • To be eligible as a supporting link, a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."
  • Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out", which means issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. A page that answers a narrow subtopic well can be pulled in even if it does not rank for the main query.
  • Traffic from AI features is counted inside your overall search traffic in Search Console, not shown in a separate report.

Two controls are often confused:

  • nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google shows from your pages in Search, including in AI features. Using them on pages you want cited works against you.
  • Google-Extended controls whether your content is used for training and grounding in some of Google's other AI systems. Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal.

What to do:

  • Confirm your important pages are indexed (the URL Inspection tool in Search Console shows this) and that they do not carry a nosnippet rule by mistake.
  • Follow normal SEO practice: crawlable pages, clear titles, helpful content, and structured data that matches the visible text on the page, as Google's guidance asks.
  • Cover the subtopics around your main service, not just the headline term, so fan-out searches have something of yours to find.

One checklist for all three

  1. Crawler access. Allow Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your firewall or bot-protection settings. Test after any security change.
  2. Indexing. Check key pages in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Some AI tools lean on search indexes, so a page missing from them is easy to miss.
  3. Answer first. Open each page and each section with a direct answer of two or three sentences, then explain.
  4. Question-style headings. Phrase headings the way customers ask: "How much does X cost?", "Do I need Y?"
  5. Checkable facts. Name what you do, who it is for, where you work and how the process runs. If you quote a number, name the source and the date.
  6. Consistent brand facts. Describe your business the same way on your site, business listings and profiles, so tools that combine sources get one clear picture.
  7. Mentions elsewhere. Useful articles, genuine reviews and listings on reputable sites give AI tools more than one source that agrees about you.
  8. A monthly check. Run the same list of customer questions in each tool, record the date and whether your business appears, and compare month to month.

What does not help

  • Hidden text or prompts aimed at AI. Instructions buried in a page for a model to read are a trust risk with search engines and readers alike.
  • Blocking the search bots to stop training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot removes you from their search answers. If training is your concern, the training controls (GPTBot, Google-Extended) exist for that.
  • Paying for "guaranteed AI placement." None of the three companies sells citations in answers, and their sourcing changes often.

FAQ

Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Not as an organic citation. OpenAI, Perplexity and Google do not sell placement in the sources of their AI answers.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?

No. OpenAI documents GPTBot as the training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.

Do I need special markup for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data still helps Google understand the page, as long as it matches the visible text.

How can I tell if AI Overviews send me traffic?

Not directly. Google counts clicks from AI features inside your overall Search Console performance data, without a separate report.

How long does it take to start being cited?

There is no reliable timeline. Each tool recrawls and updates its index on its own schedule, so treat it as ongoing work on top of your SEO.
